The old walls and copper brewing kettles of the Alte Brauerei in the Störtebecker Brauquartier have lost none of their charm even after more than 120 years.
Historic bricks tell the traditional story of beer brewing in the Hanseatic city.
The Stralsund brewery was founded in 1827 and was purveyor to the court of the Baltic seaside resorts.
Due to
increasing demand, a new building was erected on Greifswalder Chaussee, which was equipped with state-of-the-art technology – including one of the first Linde refrigeration machines.
After the Second World War, the business was continued and set up as a state-owned enterprise (VEB) in the 1950s.
After an eventful history, the brewery has been a member of the Freie Brauer since July 2012, an association of medium-sized private breweries that have set themselves the goal of preserving beer diversity and beer culture.
The members have been working together since 1969 in the Deutsche Brau-Kooperation, an association of autonomous and independent private breweries.
Although some of the individual breweries act as direct competitors on the beer market, they work together to preserve German, Austrian and Dutch beer culture.
With the founding of the initiative Die Freien Brauer (The Independent Brewers) in September 2005, the Deutsche Brau-Kooperation presented its goals and values to the public for the first time.
All members of the alliance stand up for the seven values: great freedom, personal responsibility, unique diversity, highest quality, clean environment, genuine tradition and a strong sense of home.
